Howard “Howie” E. Hager, age 89, of North Mankato, died on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Rev. Roger Knepprath officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, March 1 from 4-7 p.m. at Landkamer-Johnson-Boman Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Memorials are preferred to Alzheimers research foundation
Howard was born on October 14, 1920 in New Ulm to Frederick and Bertha (Nehls) Hager. He enlisted in the U.S Army in 1942. He and Ruth “Tootsie” were married September 8, 1943. He served in WWII and his platoon was part of the second wave of the Omaha Beach D Day invasion at Normandy, France. He was honorably discharged December 15th, 1946.
After his return from service, He and Ruth were blessed with Tom, Fred and Sibyl and built 3 homes together in North Mankato. He joined his father and brothers at their business Hager Millwork later known as Hager Manufacturing, custom cabinetry, until his retirement in 1978.
They spent their retirement traveling the U.S. in their motorhome spending most winters in South Texas or Arizona.
Howie was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Mankato where he had served on various boards. He was an avid gardener – an expert with melons, raspberries, and his fruit trees! They enjoyed trips to casinos, playing cards and golfing with their many friends and spending time with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and his stories will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 66 years, his children, Tom (Vicki Lauruhn) of North Mankato, Fred (Becky) of Good Thunder, Sibyl of Rosemount, MN, 9 grandchildren, Annie, Peter, Christopher, Mandi, Ali, Michael, Sam, Rochelle, and Kyle Jean, 8 great grandchildren, John, Hannah, Mia, Kate, James, Macy, Lily, and Elli, and his orange cat “Kitty”. He is also survived by his brother Roy and his wife Jane of Sun City, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Bertha and his father Frederick and stepmother Pearl, brother, Melvin.
